SUUSI - Southeastern UU Summer Institute - is held every July on the campus of Virginia Tech, at Blacksburg VA. So why should we, as Northeastern UUs, attend the Southeastern conference? Some of our close friends have been coming to SUUSI every summer and highly recommended it. And this year, Rev. Davidson Loehr would be giving a week long seminar in the directions of liberal religion. I wanted to hear him in person.
But that was not to be. Two weeks before leaving for Blacksburg, we received the information that Davidson Loehr had cancelled. Quickly I switched to the other week-long course. It was a mistake. I forced me to look back into the past instead of forward into the future.
There were a myriad of activities. There were nature walks and canoe trips, film study and political talks. There was entertainment - performance, music, shows. There were theme talks and worship services. There was good food, and plenty of it. And air-conditioned rooms.
Disappontment aside, we had a good week. We enjoyed being with friends - old and new - and we learned a lot.
